Sir Alec Isogoniss’ Mini has come fourth in a poll to find the best British design.

More than 200,000 votes were cast in the pool by the British Design Museum and BBC 2’s culture show to find the best British design since 1900.

In a closely fought battle the Mini was beaten to the crown by concord, which was closely followed by the London underground map and the Supermarine Spitfire.

The Mini beat other British motoring icons the Routemaster bus, which came in at number six, the E-Type Jaguar and the Aston Martin DB5, which came in at 11 and 12 respectively.

Speaking after the results were announced Radio One presenter Edith Bowman said: “Even almost fifty years after the first model appeared, the Mini is still the brightest, brashest, nippiest thing on the road. It is a part of our shared collective childhood and continues to grace the auto showrooms of the world. The beauty and grace of this beguiling little car has no rival.”

Culture show presenter Verity Sharp said of the quest for the best British design: “For me the beauty of great design is that it is wonderfully particle as well as being ascetically pleasing. The designer’s knack of creating things that give a strong sense of personal ownership, whilst also being things we want to share with everyone, is to be applauded.”
