Number plates from the three Mini’s used in the original Italian Job film have fetched almost £20,000 at auction.

The plates, which were auctioned at Cheffins auction house in Cambridge, were brought as one lot by a private telephone buyer for £19,800.

A Cheffins spokesman said: “These were certainly a lot for the dedicate Italian Job fan. This is a fantastic result.”

The plates were removed from the cars shortly after filming and have been in the hands of private collectors since.

Each plate relates to something in the film. GPF 146G came from the Grand Prix flag, HMO 729G was Michael Caine’s prison number and LGW 809G was the gang’s flight number.
