In 1967 revenge was very much on the mind of the Mini teams.
Rauno Aaltonen remembering Timo’s amazing performance on the Col de Grainer stages the previous year concentrated his attention there and managed to pull out a two-minute lead over the next car on the stage. He was so fast rally officials didn’t believe their own timing and added two minutes to his time.
When the cars reached the final stage the winning Porsche set off in the dry, but by the time the Mini set off it had begun to snow.
Fueled by anger at having his time altered Aaltonen gave it his all. But he gave it a bit too much and he lost control at full speed, the car left the road and plummeted down the mountainside before rejoining the road.
He had managed to cut off a sizeable amount of road and the car was still running perfectly so he continued on his way. Aaltonen won the 1967 Monte Carlo Rally by 13 seconds completing the Mini Monte hat trick.
